Founder’s Story
Hi. I'm Samantha Sievers, the founder of The Book Lodge. As a place-maker and storyteller The Book Lodge checks all the boxes of my heart's desire. As an independent author myself, I experienced firsthand the challenges of the writing and publishing journey. Hospitality is close to my heart and the idea that a social network could be hospitable--a place where people feel warm and welcome--felt like a novel idea. As a college student I backpacked through Europe and one of the places that connected with me most on the trip was George Whitman's Shakespeare and Co. book store in Paris. Dust laden first editions, slanting floors, traveler-worn mattresses tucked in amongst the towers of books. After handing George my short biography scratched on a scrap of paper I remember looking out the window toward Notre Dame thinking, "What world have I entered?" Shakespeare and Co. was like that. A portal through time and tale. I was fortunate to stay at George's place for a short time, reading in the shadows of legends, sorting books during the day, sipping wine with other Tumbleweeds at night. It was nothing short of magical. This imprint, this soulful memory, is what I wish for you and every writer and reader who stumbles into The Book Lodge seeking asylum from the world and it's dismal realities. As we escape into story I hope you will escape into the Lodge. May it be your retreat in the digital sphere and a haven in reality.
